Living Masters of Kaua`i & Ni`ihau

30 min., Hawai`i (USA)
Director: Nancy Hollander/ Producer: Marta Birchard.

This film highlights the handwork and oral history of five Hawaiian masters from Kaua`i and Ni`ihau: Esther Makuaole, lauhala weaver; Robert Hamada, wood bowl turner; Irmalee Pomroy, flower lei artist; Nelson Kaai, hula implement maker; and Annie Kanahele, Ni`ihau shell lei artist.

The cultural arts and handwork of Hawai`i are at risk of being lost to history, as they have received little formal documentation. This film is an attempt to preserve these traditions, honor these living masters, and educate future generations of Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians alike. The love of their art and their island environment has kept these artists passionate about their work for many decades. This video contains lively, animated interviews of the artisans, with behind-the-scenes footage of craftsmen who's incredible aloha for their work keeps them connected to a rich and honored past.
