Ngatahi - Know the Links
55 min., 2003, (Aotearoa -
NZ)
Director: Matakahi (Dean) Hapeta.
An official selection of the 2004 Sundance Film Festival,
this film is an urban and socio-politically charged "rapumentary" by
Dean Hapeta, an Aotearoa hip-hop artist turned digital-filmmaker.
Hapeta, aka "Te Kupu," contributes to the evolution
of the hip-hop form. Traveling from New York to Paris, Sydney
to Kingston, and Ottawa to Colombia, Te Kupu explores the use
of hip-hop as a medium for expression by the oppressed. From
indigenous assertions in Hawai`i and Ottawa to land protests
in Aotearoa, Te Kupu takes viewers on a global tour of native
hip-hop, poetry, street art, and activism. |
