Red Hibiscus
8 min., 2003, Hawai`i (USA)
Director: Robert Pennybacker.
Feeding on the local police's dead-file cases like a five-year-old with a birthday
cake, the Honolulu private eye in this film noir gumshoes through Chinatown's
sunny-side streets and bus-lane watering holes to close the book on the fate
of a 1950s songstress. The HD stock of the film isn't the only thing black
and white in this hard-boiled short as our detective stumbles on a solution
that islanders have known in their hearts for decades. Q&A to follow
with filmmaker. |

Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre Performance-- (Part of
Closing Night Film)
Kahurangi (Cloak from Heaven) is New Zealand's only full-time
Maori dance theater of professional caliber to maintain
a consistent presence in North America for the past twelve
years. A performance by Kahurangi brings to life the ihi
or life force of the Maori, through the songs and dances
that are part of the history and fabric of Maori life.
The performers bridge the past and the present with genealogical
chants that trace family history back to the beginning
of time; martial arts techniques that span generations
to demonstrate the lifestyle of a warrior race; and powerful
songs they perform with personal conviction and pride in
being Maori. |
